Watch our boys get wrecked racing GNCC with Yamaha!

Justin Coffey racing GNCC
The face of a man who just broke some ribs.

A week ago, I called up my buddy Justin Coffey to see if he had any interest in shooting some awesome Rally Raid Gas Gas bikes for us. Coffey's a weapon with a camera, and is usually down for whatever hair-brained ideas I can come up with, which is why I was shocked when he sounded a little apprehensive about hoping on a plane to fly from his native Arizona to Kansas.

"Yeah, the doc hasn't cleared me to fly just yet."

Come again?

Turns out, Coffey had just gotten back from a pretty rad Yamaha event. The Japanese manufacturer has gotten behind GNCC ATV racing in a big way, going so far as to talk GNCC into a class just for bone-stock 4x4 rigs like the company's burly Grizzly 700 4x4. Yamaha wanted to show off what the scene was all about, so they invited a couple of fast journalists out to see the racing from behind a set of factory-prepped bars.

Yeehaw.

Coffey's no slouch on anything with wheels, but bashing a big-boy quad through the woods isn't like firing a dirt bike across the desert. Turns out Justin managed to snag a tree at Mach Chicken, flipped the rig, busted some ribs, and punctured a lung. Then, like a hero, he managed to bang out another lap or two before succumbing to the med tent.

At no point did he mention there was footage of his heroics. That's where TK Powersports comes in.

Stephen Elmer from TK was also out to bash bars. Elmer's one of the nicest dudes you'll meet, and he practically grew up on the seat of ATV. I've seen both of these dudes whip Can-Am Outlander 1000s through the Canadian high country, and trust me when I say it was all I could do to keep pace with them. Elmer happened to come across Coffey shortly after his off, and was kind enough to stop his race to help get Justin back on his wheels.

I'd have left him there to think about his choices, but like I said, Elmer's a nice dude. Check out his footage from the race below, and check out the GNCC site for this year's race schedule. The scene's a wild one.

Oh, and don't worry about Coffey. He's already back on a bike where he belongs...
