When the Yamaha Wolverine RMAX 1000 lineup launched in 2020, it instantly became the industry's benchmark recreation/utility side-by-side. It was quick and playful on trails, extremely well-made, and had just enough utility chops to make it a good farmhand. It was one of the first rec-utes to skew more playful than utilitarian, with trail chops that far exceeded its spec sheet.
Better yet, Yamaha backed up the RMAX 1000 with a 10-year drive belt warranty, thanks to a clutching system that kept the belt under constant tension to reduce slippage and heat. With a 999cc parallel twin spitting out somewhere just north of 100 horsepower, it was very quick on its feet. Yamaha has always been near the top of the pile for initial quality and reliability, and the RMAX carried that banner proudly.
When it launched, we sung the little Yamaha's praises loudly for its interior comfort and quality, its go-anywhere, do-anything and ask-no-questions attitude. And, at a time when competing rigs would tune up a symphony of squeaks and rattles after a day on the trail, the Yamaha stayed quiet and composed after repeated abuse and hard wheeling.
This 2023 Yamaha Wolverine RMAX4 1000 XT-R is a damn-near ideal trail rig. With an SSV Works stereo, a front poly windshield, a wired tablet mount, light bars on the roof and hood, Raceline Wheels with BF Goodrich tires, and a street-legal kit, it's been set up nicely for comfort and capability. The XT-R came with a winch from the factory, a 2,000-pound towing capacity, and a 600-pound cargo box payload rating.
