DIRTHAMMER SAYS
The Can-Am Maverick X3 has established itself as the benchmark sport side-by-side since it was introduced in 2016. The rig is a chameleon, with configurations and performance figures ranging from entry level casual trail companion all the way to overboosted fire-breathing factory rally car. It has also won just about every race it has entered, from regional rally cross to the Baja 1000 to the Dakar Rally. There are many machines that come close to the X3, but very few match it. Hell, it took the 2.0-liter, 225-horsepower Polaris RZR Pro R to unseat the 1.0-liter Can-Am as the undisputed horsepower king.
For all of those reasons, and a few we'll list below, we love the 2021 Can-Am Maverick X3 RS Turbo R you see here. Located in Alpharetta, Georgia, the rig will come with its certificate of origin and a bill of sale.
It started life as a fairly humble 72-inch-wide 172-horsepower version of the X3, then the current owner hit it with a parts catalog. The results are, in a word, strong.
The highlight of the build is a mild tune from Whalen's Speed R&D, which Whalen claims bumps the Can-Am well north of 200 horsepower from the stock engine. It's also rocking 33-inch tires wrapped around 15-inch Tusk beadlocks, high-clearance A-arms, and high-clearance radius rods. The seller also added a Can-Am OEM SmartLok front differential, an expensive mod that drastically increases traction in the rough stuff.
Check out the full build list below for more, but suffice to say this is a very well done East Coast trail build. With the mods, it has the power and suspension prowess to keep up with factory halo rigs, but at less than half the price of a new Maverick R!
