NO RESERVE!
Knoxville, TN
The Kawasaki KLR is a machine whose greatest weaknesses are its greatest strengths. In a motorcycling world that prizes sexy, smooth, beautifully built rockets, with magic-carpet suspension, the KLR is a rough-hewn locus post. It's powered by an air-cooled single with all the refinement of a bucket of loose gravel. It's construction is sturdy, but you wouldn't call it beautifully crafted. Dynamically, it has been described as "the grey sweatpants of motorcycles." It's simple, unsexy, and inelegant.
But therein lies its biggest appeal. It is without doubt one of the most reliable bikes ever made, and it will happily burble its way over whatever you point it at, so long as you're OK with going its pace. It has also been described as "the AK-47 of motorcycles." 'Nuff said.
KLRs are the perfect bike for non-gearheads who just want to cross the continent on two wheels, or for dedicated riders who would rather spend their vacation money on the journey than the gear. It will ask nothing of you but fuel fill-ups and the occasional oil change, and it will keep chugging through thick and thin.
This particular 2003 Kawasaki KLR is a really cool case, because it has only covered 3,400 miles in its 23 years. That classifies it as a time capsule survivor at this point. It has a few dings and scrapes, but nothing more than a cosmetic blemish. It's also being sold at NO RESERVE from the private stock of DirtHammer CEO Zach Bowman. It has been well cared for and is ready and willing to tackle a roadtrip to Patagonia tomorrow.
