This 2001 KTM 640 Adventure completed the original Paris-Dakar Rally route. That's not a typo or hyperbole. In 2008, this bike was flown to the UK, ridden to Paris, and then ran the 15-day Heroes Legend Rallye, an amateur rally raid that ran in place of the cancelled 2008 Paris-Dakar. The bike has been owned by the same enthusiast since 2005, and gets ridden regularly in its Dakar-spec trim. It's an absolutely stunning, ready-to-ride vintage race bike built to be quick, comfortable, and reliable.
Owner Chris Grimm had the suspension re-worked by Precision Dynamics in preparation for the race, and added a rally tower, roadbook holder, and GPS unit at the same time. The bike has a period SuperTrapp exhaust, a Renazco seat, and a seven-gallon KTM-Acerbis gas tank. The engine is stock except for carburetor jetting to match the exhaust. True mileage is unknown, as the original odometer broke somewhere in Morocco in 2008. Grimm estimates that the bike has done around 15,000 total miles.
KTMs have long been known for putting off-road prowess above all else, and the 640 Adventure had a hand in forging that reputation. The giant, 625cc SOHC single is powerful and characterful, but isn't known for being smooth. The 640 is lighter than its bodywork suggests and was known for being super capable and tough off-pavement. Combine that with the unmistakable orange body work and breathtaking dual-headlight front end, and you've got an iconic Dakar weapon.

FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH
"Here is my 2001 KTM 640 Adventure. Acquired in 2005 and kept completely intact until a young man's dream of racing, as an amateur, in an amateur event, 2008 The Heroes Legend Rallye, came true. The Rallye followed the path of the original Paris-Dakar Rally route.
The bike was completely stripped, suspension prepared by Precision Concepts to match the Team USA Dakar Rally training bikes, built back up, tested, taken to Canada, flown to the UK, and ridden to the start in the middle of the night. Put under scrutineering in Paris, and never failed to take the start for fifteen race days.
The mileage is roughly 13k, the original trip meter failed in Morocco. The ICO, roadbook, and dash were a Rallye Touratech option available at the time. The Renazco saddle has seen many miles, as has the Acerbis KTM optioned Rally Tank. The fairing had to be replaced due to damage with a Perfect Fairings replica.
Should you want a motorcycle that actually raced, as an amateur, from the foot of the Eiffel Tower to the magical Pink Lake, Lac Rose, in the Senegalese Capital, Dakar, took every race stage in France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal, this is the bike!" — Chris Grimm
NOBODY'S PERFECT
No former Dakar race bike is perfect. This 2001 KTM 640 Adventure wears the scars of its adventure as badges of honor. It has plenty of small cosmetic issues, dirt, and wear patterns.
